That question is typically the first one a patient will ask his or her doctor, immediately upon receiving a terminal diagnosis. Yet the answer is a difficult one for physicians to provide, either because they can’t know with certainty, or because they’re afraid of taking away hope.

Dr. Scott Irwin — who directs psychiatry and psychosocial services for the U.C. San Diego Moores Cancer Center — discusses the topic from the doctor’s perspective in this five-minute video segment produced by KPBS Public Broadcasting.
