Patient and Family Support Volunteers
Patients and families depend on these two types of Patient and Family Support volunteers. They provide compassionate support and companionship during visits to patients’ homes or in care facilities. Learn the skills needed for this caring position at our comprehensive, 28-hour training held several times a year. Volunteer applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Experience working with chronic illness, cancer patients or the elderly is required. Volunteers must be 18 or older. For additional information, email our volunteer coordinator.
Patient Care – Part of the clinical care team, they visit patients’ homes to offer companionship, relief time for caregivers, help with errands, transportation to appointments or grocery shopping.
Complementary Care – Certified or specially trained practitioners use their skills to nurture the physical and emotional well-being of patients. Previous experience with chronic illness, cancer patients or the elderly is required. Must possess appropriate certification and previous training in:
– energy work (Reiki)
– animal-assisted social visits
– therapeutic music activity
We appreciate the dedication and commitment volunteers need to be part of our clinical hospice team. To provide consistent patient support, these volunteers commit to:
- a minimum of one year of regular weekly service,
- approximately two to four hours per week visiting patients,
- attending three to four support meetings or educational in-service programs annually, and
- an annual on-site review by Volunteer Services.
Organization and Fundraising Volunteers
Holiday Gift Wrap – Wrap holiday gifts in December to raise donations for Hospice. Choose your location, your days and shifts. Must be 18 or older (13-17 if accompanied by an adult).
Thrift Stores/Book Sales Staff – Serve customers, decorate and organize merchandise at our San Rafael, Novato or Corte Madera Stores. Must be 18 or older.
Receptionists – Greet and direct visitors at our offices. Must be 18 or older.
Office Support – Use office skills, such as filing, clerical and computer input. Must be 18 or older.
Event Volunteers – Help organize and/or take a shift at our fundraising and other events throughout the year. Must be 18 or older.
Special Projects – Sign up for specific assignments, including:
Support grieving children by sewing unique stuffed animals with our Comfort Bear Project.
Volunteer at Camp Erin
Camp Erin Oakland Bay Area® is our annual grief support weekend for children ages 6-17 that takes place each August in Sonoma.
